Received an iPhone 12 Pro overheating and the system stop working.
Translate in English:
Temperature
iPhone needs to cool down before you can use it
Can also feel the heat from the back cover
Troubleshooting
Disassemble the phone and take out the motherboard then connect with the DC power supply, and trigger the boot process to have a test. The phone can be booted normally and the current reading is also OK.
So the issue should come from the inner phone parts.
Check carefully and find there’s a crack sign on the flex cable of the earpiece flex cable.
Maybe it’s damaged in the previous disassembling process when repairing the motherboard, or replacing the screen, battery, etc. After folding for a long time, the exposed copper wire causes some short and easy to get hot.
Repair Process
Check the flex cable it’s not cracked very seriously, there is no need to jump a wire to fix it.
So we can just apply some UV masks on the flex cable first, then cure it with a UV lamp for a few minutes.
After the solidification process is finished, assemble the motherboard to have a test.
When assembling the screen, pay special attention to the flex cable, do not damage it again.
Power on and test
Playing the video and games for half an hour, still works fine, no overheating pop-up window anymore. The overheating issue is perfectly resolved.
Summary
The overheating issue might be caused by the motherboard components or chip abnormal, or the inner chips with some problem. When fixing this kind of issue, it is advised we can start with the inner part like the battery, screen, dock flex cable, earpiece module, etc. If the inner parts are damaged, we can just replace them, or try to fix them like in this case.
Lesson learned
- Not all issues are caused by the motherboard
- Parts replacement skill is also very important, pay attention to the details and do not make mistakes in the little things
